Historically, Korea has been an agricultural society. Thus, sharing, cooperating, and helping each other has been an essential part to cultivate staple food 'rice' with many other agricultural products long time ago. Traditionally, when people finished their crops in the community, they always had 'Janchi' (feast or celebration) to celebrate and to appreciate a rich harvest with hopes of peace to the sky and happiness for the community. 'Janchi' is a Korean word meaning 'open festival' or 'celebration'. Therefore, when Korean people have Janchi and they invite people, family, friends and community members for the celebration of events such as baby's first birthday, weddings, housewarmings, and other good news in the family or in the community.
Neighbors would come early and help prepare plenty of food & event for Janchi. In addition, there would be music, colorful traditional customs, dresses and good luck & cheer in public place. Through this cultural tradition, people have learned how to understand, consider, and respect for others in the community and still exists in the contemporary society in Korea. Thus, for this exhibition, I wish the Janchi to exist as an eseence of communication for the community by sharing its meaning which is the virtues of 'concern and sharing' to understand, consider, and respect other cultures & people in our community. Project PLASE and Greenmount Senior Center participated in the exhibition.
