I LIKE IT IN THE CITY
Gallery CA is pleased to present I LIKE IT IN THE CITY on view Monday, May 12, 2014 – Friday, June 6, 2014. A reception will take place on the evening of Friday, May 16, 2014 starting at 6 p.m. I LIKE IT IN THE CITY celebrates 16 artists whose work is directly influenced by Baltimore’s landscape and its’ citizens.
I LIKE IT IN THE CITY artist Ryan Syrell states, “Even when not directly apparent, I have long been influenced by Baltimore's light and forms, and I often go on extended walks to collect visual data for later use. Besides its optical influence, Baltimore is home to the most wonderfully supportive and dynamic art scene that I have ever had the pleasure to be a part of.”
THE GALLERY CA Curatorial Committee
Artists for I LIKE IT IN THE CITY were selected by the Gallery CA Curatorial Committee. They are Qwishuna Smith, Meredith Snow, Stephen Towns, and Von Vargas. Additional members include Asia Jones (Gallery Intern), and Catherine Akins (Gallery Manager).
Von Vargas
Von Vargas is a music artist in Baltimore, Md. He's been featured on Hip Hop DX, Fusicology, Jukebox DC, Hip Hop TV Japan, and in The Baltimore City Paper. Von is a member of The Recording Academy (Grammy Washington DC Chapter), Alumni Member of Raw Artist (Baltimore) etc. Von Vargas is responsible for Music Marketing Ads, Hip- Hop Ads and Campaigns for: United Healthcare, American Cancer Society, Changes Enterprises / Dickies Workwear and more. Von is currently the co-owner of Creative Development Studios, which allows him to maximize his talents while serving corporate, community clients and students of the BCPS.
Qwishuna Smith
Qwishuna is a graphic designer as well the owner of Haute Couture leather accessory line Lobe Dangle'. Her eye for detail and unique esthetics makes her an valuable creative asset in the world of fashion and beyond.
Stephen Towns
Originally from Charleston, South Carolina, Stephen Towns is a mixed-media artist and muralist currently based out of Baltimore, Maryland. Towns works primarily in oil and acrylic and draws much of his visual inspiration from Medieval altarpieces, impressionist paintings, and wax cloth prints.
Meredith Snow
Asia Jones, Gallery CA Intern
Asia Jones is a student and creative living in Baltimore City, her hometown. Attending the University of Baltimore, Asia is in route to attain her B.A. in Integrated Arts while interning at Gallery CA. She is currently curating the "DollHomes" workshop in connection with the Baltimore Collegetown LeaderShape program and working on a collection of mosaics using nature-based materials in her leisure time.
Catherine Akins, Gallery Manager
Catherine Akins is an artist and curator living in Baltimore. A native of Arizona, she graduated with a BFA in Intermedia Arts from Arizona State University and received her MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art in Curatorial Practice.
