LABOR AND DELIVERANCE

On View:  December 8th-January 18th

In Labor & Deliverance, Lewis examines the changing relationships between emotional labor and womanhood, exploring these roles in terms of race, motherhood, the security state, and the nature of employed labor itself. These works are further informed by the changing face of American cities in our current era, as shown in Lewis's Un-Monument Series which explores what we do with the empty spaces left after the removal of symbols of historical oppression.

The Un-Monument Workshop
Saturday, January 12th, 11am (in the Gallery)
Please join artist April Lewis for a first in the series of artmaking workshops in which participants are encouraged to explore the ideas of liberation and ask themselves: "What does black joy look like?"

Created as an artistic response to the dismantling of confederate monuments nationwide last year, participants will be able to create a monoprint depicting what they would place on top of monuments of their own. This will be a printmaking workshop involving xeroxes, so please bring an image of something with you to xerox. Participants will be able to bring home a plan for their own monument
